For best results, smash the "epoxy ball" with pliers and then use a heavy needle or small nail to push through the eye. I have been hard at work designing poppers for the 2012 season. This design came about as a client request for a design resembling the live gold fish his grandfather used for bait (banned in most areas). My own grandfather swore by gold fish and I think this design would make him smile. The one pictured is tied on a #2 Mustad kinkshank hook. Because gold fish have been banned in many locations, this will be a novel presenation. This is a large popper that I tie on to my flyline with a straight 6' section of 15-20 lb. low stretch mono. This popper was designed to mimic small baitfish often seen at the surface chasing mosquito larva and midges. It sits just above the surface and dives below the surface when stripping. So far it has been deadly on spring bass and bluegill in Ohio, Georgia and Florida and it should work where you fish, too. The one pictured is tied on a #4 Mustad kinkshank hook. Just wait until you see how this moves and flashes in the water. You can fish it as an injured or feading minnow. I also like fishing with two of this at a time one about 12" behind the other. I have been designing and tying flies and poppers for about 30 years. I am always trying new materials, colors, etc. I have also replaced the tail feathers with kiptail.
