Does Epoxy Add a Significant Amount of Weight to a Fly?
I just started tying my own flies, and i began playing around a little with epoxy on some like my hare's ears and pheasant tail flies..........does the epoxy add a significant amount of weight?
I don't add epoxy to PTNs and hares ears, not even after the whip finish, instead i use head cement, the reason i don't use epoxy is due to its viscosity, its too thick to add to the thread wraps, and if it gets on the dubbing the fly is ruined. I do use it for smaller patterns like scuds as it adds an excellent clear shell to these scud type flies, i also use it on worm patterns to add a glaze like that you find on the real thing, i know some UK fly tiers and Ive found they use it more than most US fly tiers i know of. You can learn lots on Fly Tying and talk to other fly anglers via this website. As for the weight aspect i don't think it does, it adds a clear shell which is excellent.

If you want to add weight to your fly there are a few things you can do, firstly when starting your fly and laying down the first thread wraps you can tightly wrap fine lead wire around the hook shank this will help it sink to the deeper areas. Also you can add a gold Bead Head, these can be made from tungsten which is heavy and sinks quicker than other bead heads there is also Brass Beads. Also its possible to add copper wire to the body of your pheasant tail etc instead of fine tinsel which some tiers use, this adds weight and it wont tarnish.
